Ever wondered if there was any truth in this statement – Breastfeeding causes breast sagging. I think we all have at some point in our lives and like many I think we all assume it does so until you get your facts right. I have always been one to dig a bit deeper and find it uncomfortable to just take ‘facts’ on face value. I would be lying if I said that this hasn’t landed me in hot water a few times (well maybe not just a few times :) ) but I believe knowledge is power and it’s better to have your facts right than follow the majority blindly. Does Breastfeeding Really Cause Breast Sagging?

 This article is dedicated to the expectant mothers who may be reluctant to breastfeed because of this unfounded myth that doing so results to Breast Ptosis (Sagging).

The health benefits of breast milk for infants are well documented, but breastfeeding is avoided by many women because of concerns about its aesthetics.
However, breastfeeding and Ptosis has less degree of co-relation, in fact there is very little objective data to support this view.

University of Kentucky, New York, Plastic Surgeon, Brian Rinker and his colleagues interviewed 132 women who came in for breast augmentation between 1998 – 2006.
Out of 132 patients, 93 met the study criteria.

Result of Survey – Out of 93 patients, 51 had an adverse change in breast shape.

 

Rinker concluded in his study that Age factor, BMI, number of pregnancies, and smoking status are independent risk factors for breast sagging rather than breastfeeding.

In addition, Rinker noted that smoking breaks down a protein in the skin called elastin, which gives youthful skin, its elastic appearance and support the breasts. Pregnancy also has very strong contribution to breast ptosis. And naturally, post nursing mothers or non-breastfeeding mothers both observe breast sagging due to expansion of the breast size during pregnancy.

So, it has nothing to do with breastfeeding, whether you breastfeed or not, sagging is a natural phenomenon with aging and pregnancy. But, the degree of sagging depends on various other key factors like BMI, sudden weight gain or weight loss (greater than 50 pounds or 23 kg), smoking status.

 

The wonderful bond you create with your baby when you breastfeed is like no other. And, the health benefits of the breastfeeding to the infant will encourage new mothers for breastfeeding.

 

In conclusion, breast sagging is something that is affected more so by pregnancy than breastfeeding. Obviously, age plays a huge part in it but unlike the widely accepted myth, breastfeeding does not cause sagging (or to be precise, is not the main cause of breast sagging post pregnancy) and plays very little part in it. So, avoiding breastfeeding just so you can save your breasts from sagging isn’t going to do you any favours. In fact, other key factors like BMI, sudden weight gain or weight loss (greater than 50 pounds or 23 kg), smoking status, number of pregnancies and age play a huge part in it.

 

On the other hand, breastfeeding provides such amazing benefits to both the mother and child that a fear of breasts sagging isn’t worth it. If one can help reduce the risks of breast and ovarian cancer, post-natal depression, give their baby a great start in life by helping them develop exceptionally well to mention but a few through breastfeeding or not try because of fear that it will lead to breasts sagging, I know what I would rather do! :)
